“Diane Flacks’ probe of religion’s impact on women will make you think.”

— Now Magazine

Nightwood Theatre

Should women abandon religion? Four female panelists face off in a wild, whip-smart public debate about religion and misogyny. With opinions flying from across the religious and political spectrum, Unholy delivers a hilarious, no-holds-barred look at contemporary women in organized religion.

Diane Flacks is an Emmy, Gemini and Dora nominated writer/performer, known for her theatre work, her four smash hit solo shows, her TV series, and her book: Bear With Me. Diane has been doing new work at Buddies for almost 25 years, including her solo show, Random Acts, produced by Nightwood and most recently, Body Politic.

As Canada’s foremost feminist theatre, Nightwood provides an essential home for the creation of extraordinary theatre by women. Founded in 1979, Nightwood Theatre has created and produced award-winning plays, which have won Dora Mavor Moore, Chalmers, Trillium and Governor General’s Awards. The company is led by Artistic Director Kelly Thornton and Managing Director Beth Brown, who have received public acclaim in artistic excellence, advocacy, and their successful training and development of emerging female talent.

Buddies’ audiences will remember Nightwood from their epic production of Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad in 2012 and 2013 – they are back with three shows in our 2017/18 season, including remounts of last year’s Unholy and Mouthpiece. Our two companies have enjoyed a decades-long relationship, dating all the way back to the 1980 Rhubarb Festival and including such hits as Diane Flacks’ Bear with Me and Maja Ardal’s HER2.
