BLOOD WEDDINGS
MARCH 4 - 19
★★★★★ “One of the best and most vivid shows of 2015…this shouldn’t be missed.”

MODERN TIMES STAGE COMPANY + ALUNA THEATRE
A family vendetta comes to a boil when a bride-to-be runs away with the son of the enemy. This 20th century masterpiece is a powerful and poetic metaphor for the oppressive forces that corrupt our ability to love freely.
Lorca’s Blood Weddings is a classic of 20th century theatre. The Modern Times and Aluna Theatre production was a breakout hit when it first came to Buddies’ stage in 2015, winning 6 Dora Mavor Moore Awards, 2 Toronto Theatre Critics Awards, and was named one of the Top 10 Shows of the year by Now Magazine.
Inspired by a fragment of a newspaper story found by the playwright, Blood Weddings tells the story of a family vendetta that comes to a boil when a bride-to-be runs away with the son of the enemy. As they flee the oppressing forces of their family’s histories, death pursues them through the thick of the forest under the light of the moon.
This story of ill-fated romance serves as the backdrop for a poetic exploration of the conflict between individual desires and social conventions. It pits primal desire against the weight of history, and holds up love as the most powerful and unstoppable force we can harness.

Modern Times Stage Company was founded in the belief that individual voices, experiences and backgrounds can unite in a common vision and create theatre that expresses the essence of a shared human spirit. Since 1989, Modern Times has explored stories from across the globe, producing adapted, translated and original works for audiences in Canada and internationally. Buddies has enjoyed a long relationship with Modern Times, who audiences will remember from their seminal production of Macbeth in 1995 to the more recent Hallaj in 2011 and the 2015 production of Blood Wedding.
Founded in 2001 as a response to the misrepresentation and under-representation of cultural diversity on our stages, Aluna Theatre aims to form a new and distinct language of theatrical presentation. For over a decade, Aluna Theatre has been attempting to shift the scales of imbalance by bringing social justice, equality and human rights to the forefront of all productions. For several years, Buddies has partnered with Aluna and their annual Panamerican Routes Festival to bring work to Rhubarb, and they were most recently seen on our main stage in 2010 with their production of La Communion and the 2015 production of Blood Wedding.
